a letter from a mother..update

I just received another letter from Maureen with a picture of her son Michael who has been on Barneys formula since June. She kindly allowed me to post the pic and some of the message

she says,
"Michael is doing well. Of course, he is still on barney's formula since it's been the most successful treatment he has had yet. ;-)

He takes daily:
2 tsp. ibuprofen (liquid)
multivitamin
4 D3's (400 IU)
1/2 tsp. flax oil
_____________________________

Maureen goes on to say Michael has been doing well but this past week he has some small flaring on his knees and elbows. During this time of year this is understandable since Vitamin D stored reserves are dropping. The formula should keep this in check until april when a little sun will give him some additional D and that should take care of it. Michael is under the care of a pediatrician and seems to be doing well. I suggested switching to a soft gel of vitamin D which might help his absorption and reduce any flaring. As a footnote any child with asthma should not take ibuprofen and check with a physician when trying the formula for a child. The summer dosage of vitamin D should be 800-1000iu/day with sun

In time I'll place all the pictures in one photo area.

hi michael and thanks maureen...bj

The right kind of Vitamin D

There are two types of Vitamin D supplement..

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) the type we make in our skin
and
Vitamin D2 (Egocalciferol) which is not a natural form for humans. It may not be absorbed as well. I would not take D2.

We want to use Vitamin D, D3 or cholecalciferol which it should say on the back of the bottle.

This vitamin D3 usually comes in two basic forms...

The soft gel with oil such as olive, soy or sunflower oil.
The small hard white tablet

The soft gel in oil is the form to buy due to better absorption. The cost is the same and i believe it yields a better blood level. Vitamin D should be taken with full meals because bile is needed to absorb it properly and this is especially true of the hard white pills of D. If you already have the white pills I would continue taking them with full meals but purchase the softgels of D when you have a chance.

The cod liver oil I do not suggest because it has too much vitamin A in it for the dosage of D needed.

Make certain your vitamin D soft gel contains no Vitamin A. Some brands add Vitamin A to the D and this, in the doses we take in the winter, would give you too much Vitamin A, so no Vitamin A in the soft gel. The amount of A in the multivitamin is fine but should be less then 3000iu.
Here's what you want at the Vitamin Shoppe or at walgreens

Here is a good video link explaining the importance of Vitamin D.. from a doctor to doctors.. it's about an hour long and well worth the time to watch.

Barneys Formula for winter.

Waiting for the winter results and they are good.

If you are in the far northern latitudes...northern US and Canada, northern Europe, Russia or conversely the far southern latitudes of New Zealand and Australia...starting now in the middle of winter I would take the following..

2000iu of Vitamin D3 for one to two weeks to see if you have side effects such as fatigue or tiredness. You should feel good. You may have some itching during the first few weeks this may last about 4-6 days. Take all supplements with meals anytime during the day. The ibuprofen with fluid at the evening meal or an evening snack before bed.

So starting in Fall.., I would start at 2000iu...after a couple of months increase the vitamin D to 3000-5000 iu depending on body size ..i found my best winter levels at 3000iu and a corresponding 3 capsules of fish oil..

and include
the one ibuprofen,
the small multivitamin
100-500 mcg of b12
50-200mg of enteric coated peppermint oil between meals and/or 15-20 peppermint altoids/day

100 mcg of selenium
fish oil...3 capsules
flax oil 2x1000mg
optional 400mcg folic acid..
500mg calcium

Vitamin D comes in international units (iu) or micrograms (mcg or ug)
1000iu = 25mcg or ug

I suggest a calcidiol 25(OH)D blood test in 8-12 wks.

Upon the return of spring i would drop the D to 1000-2000iu/day with sun.

For the vitamin D ..i would take an oil filled gelcap. It should be in 1000iu or 2000iu doses for convenience and contain only Vitamin D3(cholecalciferol) and an oil such as sunflower, soy or olive oil and gelatin...no vitamin A.

If you have or can only find the hard white pills of vitamin D then take with a full meal and find the gelcaps of D3 in oil when possible.

You should feel good on barneys formula.. if you don't then quit taking it.
Moods should be better...sleep better. fewer colds or infections Changes should begin after a few weeks...progress is slow this time of year but it should help quite a bit..
